At El Cerrito Elementary, students across all grade levels are enthusiastically stepping into the exciting world of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) through our Coding Meets Machine Learning initiative in partnership with Code to the Future. Using platforms like Playground Raise and Teachable Machine, students are engaging in hands-on projects that make complex AI concepts accessible, creative, and fun.
Here’s a look at how our students are using AI to foster creativity and celebrate their achievements:
- Transitional Kindergarten (TK): Our youngest learners are training machine learning models to recognize letters, mirroring their journey of mastering the alphabet. This interactive project introduces them to the fundamentals of AI in a playful and meaningful way.
- First Grade: Students are coding programs that train machines to recognize shapes and display matching characters. This activity connects to real-world applications like factory object recognition and photo search technology, showing first graders how AI impacts everyday life.
- Second Grade: Second graders are teaching a translation bot to convert English words into other languages, gaining an understanding of how machine learning powers tools like Alexa and Google Translate.
- Third Grade: Third graders are training a Math Bot to solve multiplication problems using variables and lists. This project highlights how AI uses data to tackle practical challenges, providing students with their very own AI-powered math assistant.
- Fourth Grade: Fourth graders are creating a face filter app with a visual password system by training machines to recognize images. They’re learning how different AI models can collaborate to solve problems and unlock creative possibilities.
- Fifth and Sixth Grades: Upper-grade students are combining art and technology to develop an interactive museum exhibit. Their program uses machine learning to provide information about scanned artwork, transforming exhibits into engaging and educational experiences.
These projects not only equip students with valuable technical skills but also encourage curiosity, creativity, and collaboration. By using interactive tools and seeing immediate results, students celebrate their successes and gain confidence in their ability to shape the future with AI.
We’re proud to cultivate an environment where students can learn, innovate, and lead in the rapidly evolving world of AI. We invite you to experience their incredible work at our Epic Build Showcase on March 5th from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm, featuring Lego Robotics. Come celebrate their creativity and innovation firsthand!
