Las Positas Honors Our Veterans with Heartfelt Ceremony

Las Positas Elementary expresses deep gratitude for our veterans! Continuing a cherished tradition, we held our 7th annual Veterans Day Ceremony on November 8. Under the guidance of International Baccalaureate Coordinator Dana Riggs, along with Julie Rashford and the Veterans Day Committee, this meaningful program is embraced by our staff, students, and the broader community.

Our guest of honor was 100-year-old Joe Mejia, a former Private First Class and World War II veteran. In recognition of his service, he received an American Flag from Troy High School’s NJROTC. Veterans from the Korean, Vietnam, and Gulf Wars, as well as active-duty military members and reservists, were also in attendance and acknowledged for their contributions. Each veteran received a small gift of appreciation and enjoyed a breakfast reception with their families.

In alignment with our school’s International Baccalaureate focus, students connected the attributes of the learner profile to the qualities of our veterans, honoring their courage, resilience, and dedication. Students recited poems, performed a medley of the armed forces anthems, and paid tribute to those who have safeguarded our freedom. Special guests from the community joined to show their support and celebrate these heroes.

We are honored to recognize these individuals who have put their lives on hold—and on the line—to ensure our nation’s freedom. Their selfless sacrifices inspire and uplift us, and Las Positas will always be grateful for the legacy they leave behind.
