An amazing display of critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and computational thinking skills were shared on April 8, 2019 at our Seventh Annual Student Technology Showcase held at the Imperial/Las Positas Multipurpose Room. The projects students shared were a demonstration of the deep learning that has taken place as a result of student-centered uses of technology throughout the District this year. Over 400 parents, community members, community partners, and LHCSD staff attended the event. Jody Green, our LHCSD Academic Coach in Educational Technology, in collaboration with 24 teachers and their students from across the district, spent countless hours preparing for the event to ensure its success.
The student showcase included projects from all grade levels including the School Readiness Program. Young children in the School Readiness program shared their green screen projects with attendees. Transitional Kindergarten students performed songs they wrote and coded using Sphero’s SpecDrums (https://www.sphero.com/specdrums). Kindergarten students in the Dual Immersion Program shared digital portfolios they have been creating this year in Seesaw. Other Kindergarten students shared how they use various robots for workspaces in their mathematics curriculum. A combo-class of first and second graders demonstrated how they are learning to code using Ozobots. Second and third graders shared iMovie, green screen movies, and stop motion videos they created for various purposes across the curriculum. One class of fourth grade students shared their circuitry projects; another shared the stories they programmed using Scratch Programming, while a third shared the digital books they authored and illustrated.
Third, Fourth, and Fifth grade students from our Code to the Future School shared their Epic Build projects using Scratch Programming, Lego WeDo robots, and Lego Mindstorms EV3 robots. They also shared how they are learning to create projects for the 3D printer. Students from our middle schools recorded an episode of their news program by interviewing district personnel. Sixth-grade students shared an environmental project they completed through the use of photography. Seventh and Eighth grade students showcased coding using Micro: bit and Vex robot kits to solve various problems. Many of the projects presented at the showcase required students to use multiple apps or tools, called “App Smashing,” to complete the task.
